Juan Miguel López holds a degree in Chemistry with a specialization in Organic Chemistry from the University of La Laguna. He was later awarded a predoctoral fellowship from the Government of the Canary Islands, which allowed him to carry out his PhD studies in the research group of Juan Ignacio Padrón at the Institute of Natural Products and Agrobiology (IPNA-CSIC). He completed his doctoral studies in 2020.
In the same year, he joined the research group of Manuel Alcarazo to undertake his postdoctoral training between 2020 and 2022. During this period, he worked on the synthesis of gold(I) catalysts bearing α-cationic phosphine-based ligands, applied to the enantioselective synthesis of carbo- and heterohelicenes through intramolecular hydroarylation reactions.
He subsequently obtained a Margarita Salas postdoctoral fellowship in the same group, where he continued his research for an additional year. During this stage, he developed methodologies for the enantioselective synthesis of azaborahelicenes and explored nitrogen atom insertion via nitrenes in skeletal editing processes based on sulfonium salts.
He later completed his postdoctoral training under the supervision of José Luis Vicario at the University of the Basque Country, where he worked on the development of organocatalytic methodologies for the enantioselective synthesis of carbo- and heterohelicenes.
After completing his postdoctoral appointments, he returned to the research group of Juan Ignacio Padrón as a postdoctoral researcher within the project Tenerife Natural Products Library (LiPNaT), aimed at generating a chemical library of natural products obtained from endemic plants of Tenerife.
